the verse, summarized: • au world where a select few have bizarre things that manifest in what one might call ''''powers'''' • an institute captures takes them in as patients, never without erasing their memories first • no remembering their home, family, friends, or name; they're not even sure how long they've been here • a mix between well center and medical facility, most of them are treated pretty well as long as they ''''comply'''' • creepy and weird things take place but the subjects patients are just tryina live their lives with proper nutrition, exercise, meditation and sometimes finger painting

THE INSTITUTE. A place where people are brought in and strange things happen. They're brought in because they're strange, and strangers want to find out why. The Strangers remain anonymous — the important ones, that is. Staff with menial jobs are extras in the set; if one of them stops showing up to work, no one is supposed to ask why. They're not supposed to care. The ones that remain are happy to collect their exorbitant paycheck every week.
The strange ones kept in cells rooms are treated like patients, not subjects. They're provided with proper nutrition, exercise, meditation (so much meditation), creative outlets and medication. The Strangers want to replicate a calm, normal, pleasant environment. Everything will be calm, normal and nice, as long as nobody tries to change that. They're given comfort; all they're asked to give in return is conformity.
But what makes them strange?
It's what the Strangers are trying to find out. That's why the subjects patients are taken to rooms behind doors behind rooms behind doors, down the stairs through another set of doors. They are told they're being treated for insomnia (weird, I don't remember having insomnia) and anonymous bodies get to work.
There's a man who can cure any disease and wounds with his blood. Another has outbursts of malicious energy that manifest through shadows. A person these two men have never met needs to be around dead things to stay alive. One needs to be contained in a room for as long as there is someone unconscious in the premises, otherwise they will escape into their dreams. They've heard stories of someone who keeps growing plant and insect-like aberrations from indeterminate body parts, which try to eat other lifeforms in other to keep growing. They think a kid was recently brought in because there are bones growing out of his back; the Strangers are excited to find out if they will turn into wings. The list goes on.
They're all strange, and the strange thing is, they don't remember anything about their life before they were brought to the institute. That's for the best. There won't be anything to miss. Like their home, their family, their friends. Their name. |
